Spring 2019 Intern Spotlight- Miranda

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock welcomes four university students to intern at our office for the 2019 spring semester. In this series, we’ll introduce you to the talented students that are helping, learning and gaining experience at our office this semester.

Meet Miranda!

Where are you originally from, what is your major and what year are you?
I am originally from Garland, TX in the Dallas-Forth Worth area, and am a senior Human Development and Family Studies major with a minor in Music.

What do you want to do after graduation?
After graduation I plan to go into ministry, and can see myself moving overseas long term.

How did you hear about this internship opportunity and what steps did you take to get here?
For my major, we are required to complete a community practicum experience. As I was researching potential places online, I appreciated BBBS’ dedication to mentoring kids and helping them reach their full potential, so I emailed the program director to see about scheduling an interview. I interviewed a couple weeks later, and am now pumped to be an intern!

Why did you choose to intern at BBBS Lubbock?
I had a couple options for my internship, but BBBS was the most up front with their information, and had clear results from the things that they stand for as an organization. I am very passionate about seeing youth reach their full potential and think that positive role models are a huge catalyst in making that a reality. BBBS is proof that mentor-ship works to build assets in kids and lead them on the road to success, so I’m glad I get to be a small part of that!

What are you hoping to learn while interning at BBBS?
I’m hoping to learn more about the Lubbock community and what needs are most prevalent within the families BBBS serves. I also hope to learn more about the program as a whole, how it achieves its goals, and how matches are supported.

What was/is your favorite class in college?
My favorite classes in college have been Child and Adolescent Guidance and Choir!

What activities are you involved with at school?
I am an officer and singer for the University Choir at TTU (I actually used to be a music major!), a couple honor societies, and the Redeemer College Ministry.

Do you have a special talent?
I wouldn’t say that any of my talents are particularly special, but I love to sing and I was a dancer for 13 years! I guess if I had to say a special talent it would be brushing my teeth without getting any toothpaste outside my mouth. Impressive, I know.

What is your current favorite TV show?
My guilty pleasure– The Bachelor lol

What was the last movie you watched?
I honestly don’t remember, but probably a cliché rom-com, because I’m basic and easily entertained

Drink of choice?
I love a good Chai Tea Latte or Vanilla Dr. Pepper

Favorite quote or expression?
I’m a bit of a quote junkie, but one of my favorites is from Philippians 2:3- “Do nothing from selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”

Someday I will…:
Go to every continent! 4 down, and 3 to go!

Slightly Addicted to…:
Chai from Yellow House Coffee and Cane’s Sauce

Dislikes:
Laundry, rats, spiders, snakes, and chewing sounds

Favorite Place:
My bed, my church, NYC, or Myanmar

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
This is the hardest question! My Top 5 in no particular order are: Greece, Morocco, China, India, and New Zealand!

If you could add one snack to the office what would it be?
Chips and Guac

Favorite Apps?
Instagram and Pinterest (I spend waaay too much time on them)

Favorite TV show to binge watch?
Great British Baking Show or Friends

Finish this sentence: I never head to the office without…
