Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock welcomes four university students to intern at our office for the 2019 spring semester. In this series, we’ll introduce you to the talented students that are helping, learning and gaining experience at our office this semester.
Meet Kayla!
Where are you originally from, what is your major and what year are you?
I am from a small Texas town named Belton. I am a senior Human Development and Family Studies major.
What do you want to do after graduation?
I want to attend a Physicians Assistant Master program, and one day work in Family Care or Pediatrics!
How did you hear about this internship opportunity and what steps did you take to get here?
I heard about this internship through my advisor. Since a community internship is required for my degree, the first thing I had to do was get the Big Brothers Big Sisters community site approved by my teacher.
Why did you choose to intern at BBBS Lubbock?
I chose to intern here because I have always had a passion for mentor programs. I was involved in a summer mentorship for my youth group, and then again for incoming freshman going through recruitment. I feel as if this internship is perfect for me.
What are you hoping to learn while interning at BBBS?
I am hoping to have the opportunity to observe first hand the impact having a role model does in a child, and how it affects them day-to-day and long term.
What was/is your favorite class in college?
One of my favorite classes had to definitely be general chemistry lab. We worked with different chemicals and got to see the cool chemical reactions.
What activities are you involved with at school?
I am involved in my sorority; Delta Gamma, Physicians Assistant Student Organization (PASO), and an honor society call Rho Lambda.
Do you have a special talent?
I have the unique ability to take 4+ hour naps during the day and still be able to fall asleep fine at night! (What else is a college kid good for?)
What is your current favorite TV show?
Always hard to choose anything besides Greys Anatomy, but This Is Us is becoming a new favorite.
What was the last movie you watched?
I typically Netflix binge TV shows over watching movies!
Drink of choice?
Dr. Pepper with lemon all the way.
Favorite quote or expression?
“It’s fine, I’m fine, everything is fine”
Someday I will:
After having travelling, have a family with my dream job!
Slightly addicted to:
Strawberries and Nutella
Dislikes:
Early mornings
Favorite Place:
Any beach, but since Lubbock is quite far from any large body of water, my bed is the second best thing.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Europe, or anywhere that’s not the US! I want to travel as much as I can one day!
If you could add one snack to the office what would it be?I’m a sucker for the good ole snacks, always fruit roll ups and goldfish!
What is the one thing you couldn’t live without?
I could not live without my family, friends and my adorable dog Zoey!
Kindle or book? What’s your favorite book?
I am a true believer in hard copy books, and Harry Potter (all of them of course)
