January is National Mentoring Month
It is our favorite time of the year, National Mentoring Month! National Mentoring Month started in 2002 to focus on the need for mentors. An important part of the campaign is Thank Your Mentor Day, in which Americans thank and honor their mentors. This year, Thank Your Mentor Day will be on January 29th, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock will be celebrating throughout January.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock has many great mentors. Our mentors serve as either a Big Brother or Big Sister, referred to as “Bigs.” As mentors, they make a long-term commitment to their Little Brother or Little Sister, referred to as “Littles.” They volunteer many hours of their time to help a child discover their potential. Our wonderful Bigs have helped many children in the South Plains Area improve their educational performance, build their self-confidence, and more.
Thank you to everyone who was or is currently a Big! Your dedication and commitment to help the children in our community do not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you for being a Defender of Potential!
Why are Mentors Important
Mentors make a big difference in their community. Signing up to become a Big Brother or Big Sister is easy and can be done online. Once you sign up as a volunteer, our team will work with you through the enrollment process. Once you become a Big Brother or Big Sister, you are on the path to empowering your Little Brother or Little Sister.
How do you inspire your Little? The answer is simple, become their role-model. As a Big, you come into your Little’s life as a friend, someone to help guide them as they navigate the world around them. The best way to become connected with your Little is by spending time together. You can spend time with them by doing fun activities such as playing sports, visiting a museum, or trying new food. Once you and your Little begin to have fun together, you will see the benefits of a strong and enduring friendship.
Children are currently waiting for YOU! The children in our program have big dreams they want to accomplish; they just need someone like you to stand beside them.
