January is one of our favorite months at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock, but not because of the cold weather and coffee! We love January because it is National Mentoring Month! This month is a great time for us to thank past and present mentors as well as share with you the great benefits of becoming a mentor. It is the start of a new year, so why not start 2020 by becoming a mentor?
Here at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock, we care for our volunteers that choose to help inspire a kid. It is a simple process to become a mentor with our agency. Once you sign up as a volunteer, our program director will work with you through the enrollment process and background checks. Shortly after you’ll become a Big Brother or Big Sister! Volunteering with BBBS gives you an opportunity to volunteer with your own schedule as well as make an impact with a local child.
What does being a Big Brother or Big Sister look like? This is your chance to be a friend to a kid who needs someone to look up to and most importantly, have fun with! As a mentor, you dedicate an hour or two every week to spend time with a Little Brother or Sister. You can make this time whenever works best for the two of you and it is all about having fun. This is when the mentor and child get to spend time doing the activities they enjoy together. This ranges from going to the movies, playing basketball, going to the dog park, or even making arts and crafts. The possibilities are endless when you are inspiring potential in a child who has you on their side!
The children in Big Brothers Big Sisters are looking for a mentor that will help them empower their potential. A lot of the kids have big dreams; they just need someone like you standing beside them cheering them on along the way! Once a child is in a match with a Big Brother or Sister, they begin to improve in education, gain confidence, and develop healthier relationships with others.
