Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock welcomes three University students to intern at our office for the 2019 Summer session. In this series, we’ll introduce you to the talented students that are helping, learning and gaining experience at our office this semester.
Meet Kelly!
Where are you originally from, what is your major and what year are you?
I am from Euless, TX, and I am a Senior majoring in Human Development and Family Studies at Texas Tech University.
What do you want to do after graduation?
I am currently a barista at TOVA Coffeehouse, and I plan to stay there as an Assistant Manager immediately following graduation. However, my future plans are to open up my own non-profit coffee shop in the U.S. or overseas, with all proceeds going to mission work and ministry.
How did you hear about this internship opportunity and what steps did you take to get here?
I have some friends who also went through the HDFS program at Tech and did their Senior internship here at BBBS. After hearing such good things about it, I sent Debra Gonzales, BBBS’ Program Director, an email to see if there was a summer internship opening. I was pleased to find that there was, and I am so grateful to be here now!
Why did you choose to intern at BBBS Lubbock?
Both recommendations from friends and BBBS’ mission/purpose attracted me to this program.
What are you hoping to learn while interning at BBBS?
I am looking forward to learning general office work dynamics and functioning, how to conduct myself in that setting, and the ins and outs of BBBS.
What was/is your favorite class in college?
Child and Adolescent Guidance, taught by Mitzi Ziegner. I strongly believe that professors can make or break a class, and Professor Ziegner made every class rich in knowledge and joy.
What activities are you involved with at school?
Unfortunately, between my regular school hours, work hours, and church commitments, my time constraints have not allowed me to get involved in any extracurricular activities.
Do you have a special talent?
I don’t know about talents, but the things I enjoy doing most would be either playing guitar or making different forms of craft coffee (sounds funny on paper, but it’s true!)
What is your current favorite TV show?
The Office, hands down.
What was the last movie you watched?
Embarrassingly enough, the last movie I watched was Spy Kids with my sisters. We did it for the nostalgia if that makes it better?
Drink of choice?
Coffee or vanilla coke.
Favorite quote or expression?
“Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.” – Francis Chan
Someday I will:
See Wicked on Broadway… fingers crossed!
Slightly addicted to:
COFFEE.
Dislikes:
Kombucha.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Italy or Japan.
Team IPhone or Team Android?Iphone!
Kindle or book? What’s your favorite book?
I prefer to have a physical book in my hands by far. It’s so hard to name a favorite, but I just finished reading Love Lives Here by Maria Goff and it was so good, so I’ll go with that.
Finish this sentence: I never head to the office without…
A pb&j and a cup of coffee.
