Fall 2018 Intern Spotlight- Erica

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock welcomes three university students to intern at our office for the 2018 fall semester. In this series, we’ll introduce you to the talented students that are helping, learning and gaining experience at our office this semester.

Meet Erica!

Where are you originally from, what is your major and what year are you?

I am a third-year advertisement major from New Braunfels, Texas.

What do you want to do after graduation?

Work as a communication/marketing director at a non-profit that has a mission that I can support.

What is a typical day as an intern at BBBS?

Normally, I create social media graphics to be posted, schedule a Facebook post for the weekend and then work on either on the graphic or on the social media portion for whatever specific event is coming up.

How did you hear about this internship opportunity and what steps did you take to get here?

I heard about this internship through my career advisor at Tech. She always sends out intern opportunities to the college and I felt like I would really love this specific internship. I wrote up a cover letter and updated my resume and sent my application to Big Brother Big Sister and hoped for the best.

Why did you choose to intern at BBBS Lubbock?

I chose to intern with BBBS Lubbock because I like the mission that they believe in. I have also always had a love for nonprofits, so being able to intern at one and learn some behind the scenes work is really fascinating to me.

What are you hoping to learn while interning at BBBS?

I am hoping to learn more about Big Brother Big Sisters as a whole since I came in not knowing a whole lot about what they do for the kids they match people up with. I am also hoping to learn about the behind the scenes work of social media and to improve my graphic design skills.

What was/is your favorite class in college?

My favorite class thus far in college was Advertisement Research and Consumer Insights because I really enjoy the background work of creating an advertisement. I like to find out why people think and do the things that they do and how we can use our platform to influence their minds to try out different products.

What activities are you involved with at school?

I am involved with the Catholic Student Associate (CSA), Diocesan Youth Retreat Team (DYRT), Raider Awakening (RA) and Tech Advertisement Federation (TAF). I am also the Vice President of Public Relations for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). I also work for Texas Tech Housing as a student assistant for Bledsoe, Gordon and Sneed resident hall.

Do you have a special talent?

I know how to fake sneeze really well, but I don’t know if that is a talent or just a weird fact about me.

What is your current favorite TV show?

Big Brother specifically season 20.

What was the last movie you watched?

Crazy Rich Asians. It was a really good movie!
