AT Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock
LITTLE MOMENTS HAVE A BIG IMPACT.
Local 2024 data reveals positive developmental outcomes resulting from our one-to-one youth mentoring services. The following data highlights the impact experienced by participants:
100% improved or maintained educational expectations
Why we track this information: Educational expectations are associated with hope for higher education or educational success, which is the link to academic achievement, high school graduation, and college/trade school attendance.
80% improved or maintained grades and overall academic performance
Why we track this information: Academic performance and class grades are associated with high school graduation rates. Low attendance (80% or lower), poor classroom behavior, a failing grade in math, and a failing grade in English are the four identified key factors that predict 60% of the students will not graduate from school within one year of expected graduation.
94% improved or maintained school connectedness
Why we track this information: Youth who feel connected at school are significantly less likely to experience health risks related to sexual health, substance use, violence, and mental health in adulthood.
90% improved or maintained parental trust and family connectedness
Why we track this information: Educational expectations are associated with hope for higher education or educational success, which is the link to academic achievement, high school graduation, and college/trade school attendance.
81% improved or maintained social competence
Why we track this information: Social competence is essential to engaging in meaningful interactions with peers and adults. It supports academic success, reduces risky behaviors, and fosters resiliency. The average match length in 2024 was 23.3 months, which increased from 21.6 in 2023 and far exceeds the 12-month national requirement. The closure rate decreased from 42% in 2023 to 33% in 2024. High average match lengths and low closure rates are indicators of the strength of the relationship within each match and indicate high-quality match support services.
89% improved or maintained emotion regulation
Why we track this information: Emotional control in children positively impacts relationships and is a good predictor of academic achievement and success. Youth who can self-regulate also have better attention and problem-solving capabilities and perform better on tasks involving delayed gratification, inhibition, and long-term goals.
89% improved or maintained depressive symptoms
Why we track this information: In recent years, depression in children and adolescents has risen significantly. This data, combined with research indicating mental disorders onset before age 25, make the adolescent years a critical window to promote good mental health and identify and address mental health problems.
